Here fishy fishy, Bribie Bream Fishing yet again

Having a rough time at the moment, stress and some personal matters taking control of me from time to time, I have taken a major interest in fishing, as you can see from this blog.

Bellara, Bongaree, White Patch, Woorim and all areas of Bribie Island, I want to catch at least 1 fish in each location.  So far Bellara and Bongaree have been hit and success.

Last night, I visited Bongaree Jetty, if you want Bream, then head their, take some pilchards and prawns with you and run in tide under the jetty, run out tide anywhere near the jetty.  Be Careful, these suckers like to wrap you around pylons.

Bream and Special Bream :)  29.5cm and 30cm

I say Spezial Bream because, well look at his head (the one on the left), he is a little odd looking, spezial hey.

Anyways, these fellows were good sizes, legal and probably would have been good eating, but what did I do with them? I threw both of them back, catch and released both of them because I don't really eat fish, I love fishing though.

I say fishing is like dating!  It's the thrill of the chase, the unexpected catch and well, once you catch them, they don't put up a challenge anymore so oh well, that analogy is probably why I am single, but I don't think like that really, ok ok, maybe i don't think like that really.

But fishing is very therapeutic, it has soothed many of my nerves and stresses, once you sit by the water and listen to the ocean calling, you know there's a world out there that is not so bad after all if we just take the time to stop, listen, relax and enjoy the moment.

Be in it, to win it

There are thousands, probably even millions of people who would rather be fishing than working.
As a landscape gardener that works Monday to Friday I have the opportunity to spend more time fishing than most people that I know, which is great from a time perspective, but, not so great from a land angler perspective because as a relatively new fisherman, I am still learning the 'ropes'.

Knowing some beauty spots that are 100% land based would be exciting because, well Bribie Bridge is plastered with do not fish signs, the bongaree jetty has given me some great catches and local knowledge sharing experiences, I need somewhere different.

Fishing is like half assed dating, it's great for the thrill, the chase, testing different baits that work and for sharing your awesome experiences with mates but gets boring after a while, need new grounds and new fish.  Maybe Markus Frind likes fishing, he is the founder of Plenty of Fish which, as a matter of interest was sold in July 2015 to the Match Group for $575 million dollars in cash' they must really have deep pockets!

Anyways, if you know some great land based fishing locations you want to share, then let me know because this 'secret spot' business is annoying really, if you can't fish it 24x7 then share it!

Land-Based Jewfish On Bribie Island

Bribie Island is possibly one of the most 'under-rated' land-based angling locations, with many sand banks, drop offs, great low tides and high tides and ample amount of structure, even for land based.

Bribie Island Jetty or Bongaree Jetty is a great spot of fishing, successful times seem to be right on Sunrise and Sunset and also fish 1 hour before until 1 hour after low and high tides for a nice feed of Bream and others.

The jetty can get busy most nights with 'resident' fisherman often using 4 to 5 rods at a time chasing Jewfish, some of these beasts have come in at 1.5 Metres long!

The Boat That Never Was

Fishing is a sport, hobby and stress reliever for many, no matter where in the world you are, you will find fisherman, probably even in the desert because their is nothing more enjoyable than freshly caught and cooked fish, apparently!

I say apparently, because I do not like fish really, I LOVE the chase, love the catch and the thrill of it, but I would happily catch 50 fish and give them to kids on the jetty to take home and eat.

I had an opportunity graciously given to me yesterday to "buy" a boat, a budget of $1500 set and I thought AWESOME, headed straight to Gumtree and looked up boats in my budget, their were around 15 in my area, in my budget.

Most were gone and the ones which weren't gone will probably never go, but a good friend of mine came with me to look over the boat and explained many hidden things to me to look for, things such as;

  • Age of the motor
  • Cracks in oars
  • Dialysis in Aluminium
There are many little, hidden things to seek out when finding a boat, like a car, you need to look closely and of course, the closer you look, the more you find (good and bad).

So I decided to cease seeking out a boat at this stage, but happy to spend time in friends boats and hire little tinnies for the time being.

Land Based Fishing on Bribie Island

Bribie Island is 'apparently' full of fishing locations, each location is dependant on the tides, times of sunrise, sunset, weather, wind, moon phase and position and so much more, so for the average fishing 'dangler' you could just find the waters edge, a nice spot to sit and 'dangle' your line with a little bit of bait and you could be in for a chance, after all, fishing is all based on chance and opportunity.

If you are an 'angler' and looking for land based 'angler' fishing locations, there are ample on Bribie Island, Ningi, Sandstone Point, Beachmere, the trick to it is, finding someone who will give up those locations, which often proves more difficult than actually catching the fish themselves.

Each locations is 'apparently' specific to the type of fish you are chasing, however, my favourite saying I use is, "You have to be in it, to win it" because no matter what the time of the day is, what the weather is doing, where the sun or moon is, regardless of all of the 'scientific' factors relating to good fishing, you can not catch a fish if you don't have a line in.

39cm Bream Caught From Bribie Island Jetty
The fish you see here was caught on a $20 rod purchased from K-Mart, just started to get into fishing and things angling, I bought a $20 fishing rod for my 5 year old son to use on our fishing days and I caught this using his line.

Fish can sometimes be picky in their food and bait choices, often you will read online things such as;

  • Clean your bait
  • Wash hands after you smoke before casting
  • Spray bait before casting
  • Dont Talk
  • Don't make noise
Well the fish above for example was caught while there were 15 people on a jetty all talking, casting and I am a smoker, so i don't clean the bait before casting, for all I care, the fish can get passive smoking issues as long as they smash my line, that's all that matters right?
